Accident prevention and health protection targets in 2022

Although the fifth wave of COVID-19 has left more of our colleagues unable to work than ever before, the omicron variant has fortunately caused mostly simple cold symptoms. Experts are hopeful that the aggressive spread of this type will inhibit the more severe variants, so that only mild illness will continue to be caused by any another outbreak.

Education

Unfortunately, it was not possible to organize the usual periodic mass training sessions due to epidemic control measures and restrictions – the only exceptions were the weekly training materials and the training of new employees. We consider it very important to resume regular training as we have found that the ‘recovery’ following some waves of the epidemic unfortunately leads to a laxer attitude in compliance, which also increases the risk of injury. Our aim is that this year, all colleagues will receive a total of 6 hours (360 minutes) of EHS training, tabled as follows: weekly OPLs: 5 minutes; off-shift training: 10 minutes; quarterly workshop: 40 minutes. Signing the attendance sheet will certify attendance of the training and acquisition of the knowledge communicated.

Accident Prevention

It has been our experience for many years that the longest downtime is caused by touching rotating-moving machine parts and by improper troubleshooting on the machine. The latter occurs when the machine is in automatic mode – or when the operator is trying to clear a jam when the machine is not properly stopped. Next in line are frequent but not short-lived cutting injuries and failure to wear proper protective equipment when cutting with a scalpel. Other accidents have been caused by poor communication and lack of information while working together, where the worker in the dangerous area of the machine does not receive information about starting the machine. Other areas requiring special attention include the safe handling of forklift trucks and bobbin cars, with regard to those within their reach. In our workplace-specific training materials used during the workshops, we will present the accidents of the last 5-10 years, lessons learned from them and the current rules. The accidents will serve as evidence of the importance of compliance. It should be essential to follow the so-called “rules of thumb” (see the 10 rules), such as activating the emergency stop before starting an activity in a hazardous area, wearing the correct protective equipment and cutting in the correct direction (away from the body), as these are the basis for a long and accident-free working life for all our operators and maintenance staff.

Health Protection

The utilization rate of the examinations provided during the health screening days organized in 2021 was 86% of the maximum possible number of participants. This year, we have already worked to ensure that all shifts have the opportunity to participate during working hours, so that in 2022, for the first time, night shift workers will be able to attend the tests. We encourage you to take part in the screening program planned for 1 and 2 June, as early detection allows for more effective treatment of the diseases!

We wish you all accident-free work; take care of each other!
