Out to the Nature, also in autumn! 7 tips for hiking in the area

Colorful leaves, warming sunshine, rich scents… Autumn is a wonderful time to spend your free time hiking instead of locking yourself up!

Our surrounding areas also offer plenty of opportunities for active holidays, most of which are just an hour’s drive away. Here are some nearby destinations worth exploring.

Adony
By car: 21 km – 22 minutes 

Along the entire 6.5 km long mountain range, there are more than a thousand winepress houses lined up, with most of them beautifully restored that make a unique attraction in the area. The wine-growing culture of the former farming town is outstanding and a visit to the vineyard hill is a real experience especially during the harvest season. While in Adony, it is worth visiting the Zichy Castle Park and the Great Island, where one can also take a stroll.  

 

Lake Velence
By car: 43 km – 40 minutes 

The third largest natural lake in our country offers great opportunities for walking and cycling. The cycle path around Lake Velence is about 30 km long and can be covered comfortably in a few hours by both the father and the grandfather of the family, without any special physical training.  

 

Pákozdi Pagony Game Park and Arboretum – Lake Velence surroundings

For nature lovers, the park on the northern shore 

of Lake Velence is a great place to relax. In addition to the varied flora of the spacious meadows, visitors can see big games in the arboretum as well as pheasants and peacocks in the bird boxes.
Children can enjoy an adventure playground with wooden elements, while a 9-stop forest-hiking trail will help them learn more about wildlife. Recommended for all aged 0-99, it provides scope for a light, fun-filled program. 

 

Alcsúti Arboretum
By car: 73 km – 1 hour 

One of the oldest in the country, this 40-hectare English park-like garden is a popular destination for hikers. The park, which is home to a whole range of rare plants, guides hikers along pleasant walking paths and bears a different look every season of the year. 

 

Gaja Valley Landscape Centre
By car: 73 km – 1 hour 9 minutes 

The gorge on the road to Isztimér offers a wonderful setting for hikers. On the 4-km hiking trail along the Gaja stream, which is easy to follow, visitors can learn about the unique wildlife and history of the area, and climb up to the valley rim for a wonderful panoramic view of the Bakony. The nearby Károly Castle in Fehérvárcsurgó is one of the places of interest, offering visitors a number of precious moments. 

 

Csókakő Fortress
By car: 75 km – 1 hour 11 minutes  

The county’s only medieval castle stands on a small hill on the side of Csóka Hill. A beautiful path leads from the foot of the hill to the entrance of the beautifully restored stone building, which can be reached in about a quarter of an hour. From the upper castle you have a beautiful panorama of the Mór wine region and the Bakony. The site is open from 1 April to 30 November from 9:00 to 20:00 and admission is free. After a pleasant excursion, feel free to stop by the Pótkerék Csárda for a delicious lunch. 

 

Szentkirályszabadja –Ghost Town
By car: 99 km – 1 hour 16 minutes  

The area, known as “The Hungarian Chernobyl”, was once home to families of Soviet soldiers who lived there. The five-storey apartment blocks gradually fell into disrepair after the residents moved out; and now they provide a great illustration of what the world would be like decades after an apocalypse. The deserted site is both intriguing and eerie, a unique experience for those looking for the out-of-the-ordinary.
