Gábor Kovács, an electrical maintenance worker, has been with us for four years. By his own confession, he has been fascinated by books since childhood. His passion has been realized in the dark fantasy book “A demon’s pit”, which he wrote and published in March.
Where did you get the idea to write a book?
“I’ve been interested in books from a young age. At first I was only interested in illustrated books, but as I grew older I read more and more, including the compulsory literature. Later on, I think it was a Lord of the Rings film that caught my interest and turned me towards writing a moving picture, a screenplay, or more specifically a story. Then I began writing one morning more than two years ago, at first just for myself. When I finished it and read it, I thought why not try to get it published?”
How long did the writing process take and what was the journey to the printers?
“The book took approximately half a year to write. After that, it took about the same amount of time to find a publisher. Finally, in another eleven months the book got to the bookshelves.”
Where did you get your inspiration and what authors do you like to read?
“Jenő Rejtő’s works had a major influence on me. I can say with a high degree of certainty that I have read all his works available at least once. Ödön Barsi’s work has also played an important role in the development of my taste, and I would definitely mention Leslie L. Lawrence. These authors and their works have contributed greatly to the development of my reading habits.”
Without spoiling anything, what can we tell you about your book?
“The full book, which hit the bookshelves on March 7, is a nearly 300-page adventure treasure hunt story with dark fantasy elements. Men of questionable morality are looking for treasures hidden in a demon’s pit.”
Are you planning a sequel or prequel to the story?
“I have 100 pages of the sequel already written. In print, this would be the same as about 200-250 pages. If all goes according to plan, it could be published as early as this year.”
Do you already have a publisher for it?
“No, not yet. What is important to know is that in my case, one book is one contract. I still have to find a publisher for this work.”
How does it feel to see your own intellectual product, your work, on the bookshelves?
“It’s a very strange feeling, like nothing else and it’s a very good feeling. It’s satisfying to know that it has been published commercially. Also, I see it as a process of self-improvement, I think I have built up a lot, both physically and mentally. I’ve improved a lot in terms of my writing skills. I’m aware of what I need to pay more attention to in the future, more specifically when writing the sequel.”
